Position Summary
The Ultrasonographer-Echo/Vascular Tech performs a variety of specialized technical tasks utilizing high frequency ultrasound waves to assist with the detection of anatomical abnormalities.
Core Job Responsibilities
- Perform a variety of complex specialized tasks utilizing ultrasonic high frequency sound waves and demonstrate proficiency by performing routine and emergency echocardiograms, including but not limited to 2-dimensional, 3- dimensional, Doppler, and Stress Echocardiogram, as requested by physician and in accordance with standard practices.
- Perform vascular ultrasound procedures including 2D and color Doppler imaging and procedures as required maintaining patient records and documentation.
- Positively responds and implements change when needed and has good decision making skills.
- Assists with quality control and maintenance of all equipment in the area
- Properly utilize accessory equipment such as transducers, cleaning systems, warmers, scanners, printers, and PACS workstations
- Prepare patients for procedures, explain procedures to patients. Report changes in patient condition to medical staff. Provide an oral and written summary of preliminary findings to the cardiologist/radiologist. Evaluate quality of exams. Determine if additional sonograms or ultrasound procedures are indicated and discuss with physician.
- Assists in training of new staff and of students during clinical rotations
- Follows, maintains and helps implement hospital and departmental policies and procedures
- Consistently communicates with patients, guests, staff and physicians in a positive manner
- Knowledgeable of compliance and regulatory requirements and adheres to Federal, State, accrediting bodies, and standard practice of care for patients, staff, guests and facilities
- Adheres to departmental procedures and protocols
- Ensure correct charging of procedures and supplies on a daily basis
- Works as a team member with peers and other departments. Responds calmly and efficiently to situations.
- Regularly attend departmental meeting, in-services and actively participate in continuing education activities
- Use CPR skills when required.
- Dispose of biohazard waste according to state standards.
- Maintain OSHA requirements and practice OSHA standards.
- Perform accurate, legal, and ethical documentation at all times.
- Other duties as requested by supervisor or manager
- Prepare exam and treatment rooms with necessary instruments and supplies.
- Prepare and maintain supplies and equipment for treatments, including sterilization of equipment.
- Assist with scheduling of tests and treatments.
- Prepare patient for examination.
- Adhere to and practice appropriate infection control policies and procedures.
- Perform other duties as requested.
Minimum Requirements
Education
- Accredited two-year Allied Health/Nursing Degree or Bachelor of Science degree and/or successful completion of a recognized and accredited program in Ultrasound Technology. Sufficient education/training is required to acquire ARDMS, CCI or RCDS certification in cardiac ultrasound and RVT in vascular ultrasound
Experience
- Experience as a cardiac sonographer with additional experience doing vascular exams
Required Licenses/Registrations/Certifications
- Currently Registered RDCS and RVT
- BLS Certification
